World Day for Physical Activity

April 6, 2024

World Day for Physical Activity is celebrated annually on April 6. It was established in 2002 by the World Health Organization (WHO) to raise awareness of the importance of physical activity for health and well-being.

Physical activity is important for health because it helps to:

  • Reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and some types of cancer.
  • Improve mental health and well-being.
  • Strengthen bones and muscles.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Improve balance and coordination.
  • Reduce the risk of falls.
  • Increase energy levels.
  • Improve sleep quality.

The WHO recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity each week. Children and adolescents should get at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. No matter what type of physical activity you choose, the important thing is to make it enjoyable and to do it regularly.

Here are some tips for getting more physical activity:

  • Find an activity that you enjoy and that fits into your lifestyle.
  • Make a plan to be physically active every day.
  • Set realistic goals and gradually increase the amount of physical activity you do.
  • Find a workout buddy or join a fitness class.
  • Make physical activity a family affair.
  • Take advantage of opportunities for physical activity in your community, such as walking trails, parks, and gyms.

World Day for Physical Activity is a great opportunity to start getting more active. So get moving and have a good time!
